This was consequently felt also by the (mainly) German audience, making the seats bounce, moving their bodies according to the rhythm and endlessly clapping with their hands (and feet!) in demand for more songs from the group. The energy and joy for singing were yesterday just pouring out of them, filling the concert hall with a very special atmosphere. Although the group is performing all the time “standing still”, there is nothing statically about them. Perpetuum Jazzile can be therefore described as a magnificent combination of around 30 young talented voices, sounding outstanding not only together, but as well individually. Since February this year the conducting of the group has been however taken over by the extremely charismatic and energetic Swede, Peder Karlsson. It was founded already in 1983 as Gaudeamus Chamber Choir by Marko Tiran. In 2001, Tiran passed the art leadership of the choir to Tomaž Kozlevčar, the renowned music producer, arranger and vocalist, who did almost the majority of musical arrangements they perform today. They perform bossa nova and swing music, as well as funk, gospel and pop, using their voices as “the only instrument needed”. The choir uses a wide spectrum of jazz styles, performing complex and dense harmonies, characteristic of close harmony music. Perpetuum Jazzile, or PJ as they like to name themselves backstage, is a Slovenian choir that performs jazz and popular music. And if being abroad for a longer time makes you feel somehow more nostalgic about your homeland, well yesterday I felt exactly this and much more – I felt proud to be a Slovenian! Indeed, what the group presented us lucky ones sitting in the Urania concert hall yesterday night was a pure “vocal ecstasy”. These and similar expressions were just ‘raining’ yesterday from the mouth of obviously touched audience after the concert of a Slovenian a capella jazz choir Perpetuum Jazzile here in Berlin, Germany.
